Here is my new year post...a few days early! I do miss all the love from blog land...

I had a good break...and am going to take it easy (slower pace) for the new year.

I am hoping to hang a new shop at JazzKats in Hollywood this week for the new year.

I would love to blog about that and hopefully that will happen...They are awesome, JazzKats is in Hollywood in Portland....they are well loved and always busy. Rightfully so...awesome people..great cafe..

So anyway...here is a new movie that I made last night about a new master carving that is

going in the bisque kiln which will fire in a few days...

This is my most recently printed linocut project, and

this edition has only 4 prints! I changed the master

after this printing...

So ..small editions of hand made prints are very special!

This one is already framed! Float Matted...
It is a plexi-IKEA frame..

This is not the fanciest frame,

and if you would like

to reframe it when you receive it
then I understand. But this way it is ready to hang

and enjoy and the frame is also

safe to ship.

Busy Life ~ New Sketches...

Welcome New Viewers
and thanks for Visiting!
I am a busy mother and ceramic artist
and when I am sitting somewhere waiting for kids
my sketchbook...is my sanity...

Its just me and the sketchbook...

This is a drawing of a beauty from 1917 or so
at first I started with a pen that I didn't like

and decided to change pens..even if the color

was different...

I sort of enjoy a drawing after an unexpected thing

has occurred ...like a change in pen color
it sort of frees the direction of the drawing..

I was drawing this while my kids were rehearsing at
their violin teacher's house..Clarisse Atcherson.
They were rehearsing for a Prelude Concert in the lobby

of the Schnitz..in Portland...

We will be able to see a rehearsal of the
Oregon Symphony with Soloist

(I think rehearsals are fun to watch)

I am hoping to do something interesting and surreal with
her hair, and the folds of her gown...

Then at another violin lesson,
I worked on this drawing:

This is a landmark in the Hawthorne Nieghborhood

in Portland
This is a place where you can see second

run movies, and eat pizza and have beer for a

reasonable price...

and to go with my "Endless Sky" ...or

reflected sky theme..I am
endeavoring to draw clouds

This photo of Darba Grass

is from my most popular post ever

about a grass pendant that I made
(which I still have)

Darbha grass is identified with Lord Vishnu and it is believed to possess the power to purify anything.
It is believed to have been produced during the cosmic churning of the ocean of milk.
Sakyamuni Buddha is believed to have sat on a mat made of darbha grass when he got enlightened under the Boddhi Tree.
The name of Kushinagara, where the Buddha was cremated, is believed to be derived from Darbha's other name Kusha.

Kimi Kobashi's Traveling Journal is in Portland! Update!

hmm..I guess my captions didn't show up in the slideshow..
So I'll explain a few of the photos
My daughter is shown marveling at the beautiful watercolors.
I used my own photos for the magnolia and the street car drawings..
The butterfly graced me by
holding still for me
to take several very very close photos
She was fabulous..and I LOVE her eyes.
I know she was a she...
In another sketchbook post I have a beautiful
bee on a building..so this is a variation of that theme..

I rearranged many citiscape photos that I had to pick and
choose the buildings and I didn't try to make the landscape
factually realistic...
but this IS the Broadway Bridge..my favorite Portland Bridge..it is
a lovely rustic red..and Portlander bike and walk over by the
thousands everyday.

Portland boasts some of the most creative handmade bikes in
the world..this one is actually pretty tame by Portland standard..
It is very commen sight to see double decker bikes being
skillfully piloted hither and yon by eclectic Portlanders.
...and seeing a man in a flowing dress, with a viking hat on a
double decker bike...is also ....not a stretch for Portland

Also by the Broadway Bridge is where I was
privileged to see...a Star person vehicle...
Like animal or insect encounters, Star Vehicle sightings are
a sacred Blessing. I do believe that our brothers and sisters
of the stars are sheparding our planet to best of their abilities
while allowing evolved directives to prevail.

In this post you can see a photo of
the actual orb that I was finally able to photograph
The lamp post in the photo (on that post)..
IS on the ramp to the Broadway Bridge...
where I was standing...frantically photographing the sky
in the blinding sunlight.

So I drew an orb in the clouds..at approximately
the size that it was when I first saw it..
(about the size of an apartment)

Creativeness and Kids

A quick post about

helping kids start creative businesses.

So my daughter makes lovely earrings
and is very excited about having an
Etsy shop with her girlfriend.

So I am trying to imagine how

to make this fun, educational, and hopefully

a positive experience.

So I do think that her product is marketable,

and she has been doing research.
Looking at other Etsy shops and comparing

prices, sale frequency, photography, product quality
and things like that.

She is in a huge rush to get the shop up.
I want to know how we are going to package and mail

things when a sale happens.

So today we worked on the cardstock that the

earrings would be mounted on.

We started with a few flower drawings and
Watercolors that she has done recently.

So..we tried to remove the handwriting digitally, and learned alot in the attempt, but I had a deadline and wanted to get to the post office..sowe decided to try another painting...

We went gray scale at first,

but after visiting Kinkos we may
do it over and keep the color..
I don't think that the color

would've been too expensive to use...
but anyway...

Then we reduced and copied and pasted it onto a new white

background and saved it all onto a jump drive...
and off we went to the post office and kinko's
all in the Hollywood nieghborhood.

It was my first time printing from a jumpdrive

at Kinko's and my DD first time too...
it was kind of slow, but it worked..and
the image had perfect integrity even though it was

copied, which is different from the old fashioned way

to reduce and copy using paper.

DD went and researched the prices

for ivory card stock..and

she loved how it looks...so we made 5 copies

and she got to work using the cutter
(first time by herself)

While she was doing that...I worked on another reduction...

This one IS done the old fashioned way,

reduce, make copies, cut and paste to make a master

and I showed her how to do this too...

These will be a sort of ribbon to fix to the outside of her

mailing package.
I have this on my packages which puts alot of

love and care on the outside of the package.

We did 5 copies of this in ivory (not card stock)
and we were done!

We found perfect brand new boxes for mailing earrings

at the dollar store.
Next we will work on different sizes of card mountings,

because some of the boxes are more narrow than the card...

Mail Art - Forever on my Sketchbook !

I love the sweet gifts

that Jeannine
sent me in the mail

I don't do many mail exchanges

so it is delightful and rare for me

and Jeannine is so thoughtful.

I waited to open the envelope with my Daughter
Here are the pictures...

I had been wondering where my "horse sketchbook"
was..and when I saw the horses that Jeannine sent,
I told my daughter that I was missing this sketchbook,

and she went and found it!!

So that is the sketchbook that I
taped the mail gifts into...

I love the notes from Jeannine....and they will make this sketchbook muchcozier as I continue to fill the pages :)

Today is the First Day of Fall
So I'm announcing the
Heedless

Fall
Appreciation Giveaway!

UpDATe..this item is finished!! and the

so you will get to follow it through its final firing
coming up in a couple of weeks.

It is the first print of this limited edition series...
I'm only making 52 of these...
Titled: "Blah Blah Blah"
It is a "repeatable matrix"
porcelain print...each one is slightly different because they
are hand stained.

So someday when I am famous..you can send your
grandchildren to college with this piece!
..and then your grandchildren can teach me how to spell
"refrigerator" and a few other things.

This is a very serious work of fine art,
which comments soberly on the human condition...

This is a celebration of human-ness
and how " it all seems so important at the time..."
Myself included... so lets all hold hands

and embrace our "Blah Blah Blah" nature..

This piece will be fired without glaze..

it will have a matt finish..
AND...it is ready to hang on the wall!

It will be waterproof..so can hang it in the kitchen or bathroom
or anyplace humid or not humid.
It is washable, but I am not sure about foodsafe
The glaze makes everything foodsafe...so it might be
foodsafe, but without the glaze...I wouldn't lick it very often..
(no lead though...)

Here is the back of it..the hanger is secured with

tiny old fashioned television prints...
(because TV sort of goes with the "Blah Blah Blah" theme...

It is signed and numbered on the back as well

When the piece is finished...the blacks will be blacker...they

darken up in the high temperatures..

SHIPPING IS FREE!

Sketchbook Update!!

Its the sketchbook update!!

I sort of want people to see that the early sketches..were very
safe..and simple...and then
they slowly branched out...

Taking more and more chances...

I have never been good at Holiday cards (mailing them...before the Holidays)

...but I think that these crazy sketches would make good holiday cards...

Jean Luc Picard

Captain Jean-Luc Picard (pronounced /ˌʒɔːn ˌluːk piˈkɑrd/) is a Star Trek character portrayed by Patrick Stewart. He appears in the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation and the feature films Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek Nemesis. He also made an appearance in the pilot episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Depicted as deeply moral, highly logical and intelligent, Picard is a master of diplomacy and debate who resolves seemingly intractable issues between multiple parties with a Solomon-like wisdom. Though such resolutions are usually peaceful, Picard is also shown using his remarkable tactical cunning in situations when it is required. Picard has a fondness for detective stories, Shakespearean drama, and archeology. He is frequently shown drinking Earl Grey tea and issuing an order by saying "Make it so".

I was lucky enough to find a Jean Luc Picard action figure still in the box at a garage sale last year. My daughter ended the debate about whether to leave him in the box or not..with her decision toopen the box and play with Jean Luc.

This Jean Luc project was started by this incident earlier this week:

Very groggily waking up...I had been staring without seeing..not knowing I was awake for some time...when eventually...I slowly slowly focused on Jean Luc (the action figure)..as he stood on my dresser.....

Slowly...slowly...I realized that there was an exquisitely beautiful grasshopper type insect next to Jean Luc. Both of the standing still and facing forward.

Having no objective mind that was functioning...I didn't notice this as anything out of the ordinary for many moments as I gazed without comment...at the grasshopper.

Slowly I realized that I had never seen the grasshopper before..and also it was so unusual looking..I was unsure that it was real.

I climbed out of bed..and looked at it...delicate and shining an innocent green...with red trimmings...it was perfectly still...so I had tolook at a long time to figure out that it was real.

I talked to it..and told it that I would take it outside, and that it didn't need to be afraid..just climb onto the paper I was offering it. It did...and it didn't hop away..(I showed it mental pictures of the green garden outside where we were going)..and then I let it crawl offon the blueberry bush.

At first it didn't want to go. I really should have gotten a picture..it was just a beautiful grasshopper.

So then I thought about what the photo of Jean Luc and the grasshopper would have been like...Then I thought about the absurdity of taking photos of Jean Luc...in the manner that I did with Trout...and shazam!! I had a photo project...

Here is a photo...of what the grasshopper looked like..but it had one head...I didn't find another picture of what the grasshopper really looked like...but he was a friendly looking grasshopper and his head was held up high...

Grasshopper Symbology -- The grasshopper is associated with astral travel. They have the ability to leap through time and into space where the true mysteries of life exist. People with this medicine have the wisdom necessary to overcome obstacles efficiently and are able to jump into successful ventures without preparation or planning. When the grasshopper appears to us we are being asked to take a leap of faith and jump forward into a specific area of life without fear. Usually that specific area is one that we have avoided and is often connected to change on a larger scale. This can represent a change in location, relationships, career or just in the way we perceive ourselves.Grasshoppers can only jump forward....not backward, or sideways. So, when grasshopper shows up he could be reaffirming to you that you are taking the right steps to move forward in your current situation. Or it could be that he is telling you to go ahead and move forward, getting past what is hindering you. This is why grasshopper is the symbol of good luck all over the world. Grasshopper's ability to connect and understand sound vibrations is why he is also a symbol of your inner voice. he could be telling you to trust yours.

So to me...leaping through time and space...where true mysteries of life
sort of sounds like Jean Luc Picard
I don't think this was an

accident....

We interrupt our

regular programming to bring you...
photos of the gentle

star people who

are trying to make their

benevolent presence known to
all of us...

They could come down and make a huge show,

but they know that would

cause most of great mental and emotional trauma.

They know that we have been taught to fear
star people, and so with compassion they

are watching our planet

and
preparing to let us know

that they are here...

So I have been wishing to see an orb or an alien ship..and my

wish was granted a few days ago

Here is my description of the above photo as

I know that this isn’t the most incredible photo… But I watched this orb for several minutes..and at first it was quite close and large..it would have made a great zoomed in photo..but I was mesmerized by the sight and watching the way the orb wobbled. It appeared to be about the size of a studio apartment..and was definitely dark if not black on the underside. It was drifting toward me..and then I realized that I should take a picture…then because the sun was so bright..I couldn’t see the viewfinder. So I struggled with the camera..looking up as it wobbled away. Then I gave up trying to zoom in on (because I couldn’t see in the glaring sunlight)..so I took a few zoomed out photos..blindly shooting only using the lamp post as a landmark…I have a video too…HD..but I can’t see anything on it..though something has to be there. So anyway..the orb kept getting farther away while I struggled with the camera..

So that’s my story!

Then yesterday August 24 2011...
I was sitting on 17th street, behind the NWCT building in the shade
working on my carvings...

Here is a panorama of the spot..that I took just for fun...notice how clear and blue and

normal the clouds look..

Then I hear helicopters and looked up to see two black armored helicopter flying

close together directly under a giant dark cloud...
The helicopters were very low..I could see all of the missiles

and weapons loaded on the outside of them.

Then I saw the sky..and noticed that there were sirens going off downtown
In multiple locations...

and finally this shot..which features my

art subject of the moment..people on their cellphones
not aware of what is happening...

..again..I am not judging..I just think it is

funny...

Thanks for checking out my blog, normally this is about the

artwork that I do...but I hope to keep seeing and

posting star people photos.

Don't be afraid of star people,
they are much more safe and friendly than

some humans..

Fragrance of Forgetting~ ..ready to print!

So I already published a short slideshow of the drawing process
of this linocut..and
this is full set of photos..from start all the way through carving the lineoleum.

40 hours of drawing and carving

a new idea on linoleum..

creating a master for printmaking...

If I were to write a "how to" paragraph on
getting started on your own idea.
I would say..start with an idea that you have

drawn or sketched before with an idea that you

already know that you like. (you can't erase on linoleum)
When thinking about printmaking ...think about exaggerating

some of the values (dark and light) of your concept...
Think about mixing busy or complex areas...with restful

areas for the eye....

And for a busy person like I am..make it portable..and work on

it a little at a time. I started this drawing in early July...
I just bought the paper for printing..and hopefully will

be handprinting the first edition of this print soon!

Wow..it was a little hard to get back

in the swing of blog posts

after the serenity of camping!

I hope that you are all still

reading and

leaving me comments.
I want to warm the blog up again

before I offer a guest artist blog post...
hopefully the next post..you are going to love it...

But first..you may remember that this is the second time that I have attempted

the master carving on this subject..in fact there is another

video of the first time.

Its good to not be attached to your

art..and some art explodes and is only

art for a few seconds or days..

But in this case I decided after enough time to carve the

slab again (not identical of course, but the same inspiration)

and here it is...this one will be drying thoroughly before my

next bisque fire...which will be in a few weeks..my kiln is almost full again :)

"Fragrance of Forgetting" ~ the start of another Linocut Project

I had a bunch of ideas about talking about how I get ideas about what to draw..and how to start on a linocut. But I broke so many of my own guidelines along the way...

Normally I would say, because the linoleum is so expensive..I would take the time to work the whole drawing out ahead of time..because you cannot erase on lino...

But I didn't follow my own advise...and had to change things as I went...

One way to change things is to blacken the lino and then trust yourself to carve it correctly the first time (risky)...

Carving is a different kind of meditation from drawing..there are enough things to think about...which direction the tool should be pointed..what efforts have you made to prevent yourself from overcutting a line.

I did the drawing hours at time over a few weeks...and the carving part...is going to take a long time...two hours on the final photos...

That's okay..I am going to be sitting by the pool alot in the next few weeks..

In Celebration of this Kiln!

When I finally got to the bottom shelf

and unloaded this kiln...
I realized something amazing.....

None of the porcelain seams popped in the

highfire!!! YAY (before I was losing 40%

of my mugs to porcelain seam pops)

Then I switched to Trillium Porcelain..and
I didn't even to dare to hope for a perfect kiln

but there are no technical flaws on any mugs.

No mugs..sticking to shelves (I fired to a low cone 6)
because before the unglazed clay bottoms were sticking..

That didn't happen this time!

No popped seams on mugs...

No glaze crawling....

Little Buildings...not sure what the point is

I do believe that "pointless" art

is very important

Drawings in the sand that will be washed away,

Songs that no one will hear,

Photos that will never be hung,

Art for no reason..

So anyway I like city buildings, and little

city buildings so I decided to

see if I could make a little building mold or two..

Here are the beginning efforts..in porcelain (not bisqued)

In a building on the left,

a young man is being berated by his

father for playing a small part in the

elder's broken dreams and failures.

A young mother on a lower floor,

is raising a child in sweetness

despite
never having had

been appreciated herself.

In a window across the way,

is a 70ish bachelor

who

pushes away all love

and yet

wishes that he

had

some

children..

A little bird lands

on the windowsill

of a young man with

great musical heart and

huge possibilities

who

struggles

mightily with his weight

but his friends love him

just the way he is....

Who will live in these buildings?

Maybe a woman who carves

clay molds

by the side of the

swimming pool..

wearing her sunhat

and singing in

french to herself..

not caring if people hear..

Open Swim is in a half an hour,

time to get going!

"Descended from the Tree" limited edition Hand Made Print

Welcome back to the Heedless adventure in

whatever is fun to do at the moment...

At this moment...we get to see what a print

will look

from this linocut.
Here is the blog post about the drawing and carving
of this linocut.

I went to "Collage" on Alberta Street and bought "Hosho" paper,

and Speedball block printing ink ~waterbased...
My brayer is a little old..but if I go over

and over and side to side..it coats the block

well enough..

first swipe with the loaded brayer...

First full inking...

Here is the paper after I hand pressed it onto the

linoleum.
The first print is never useable...for me..so we don't

stress about it too much.

Also the Hosho paper is really soft and beautiful,

and I fold and tear it to the correct size..

Here is the first peel!

So..using the print...I can see about 10 places that
I need to carve some more...

Here is one...
The buildings really done "read" easily...
more definition required...

Here is the same view..(mirror image right?)
of the actual linoleum...

So I carved and "fixed" about 10 spots,

and here is the paper pressed

into the second inking..
You can see that there is much more

ink coming through the paper..this

will be a darker higher contrast print.

Love this part!!

First print on the left...first actual print of the "run" on the right...

Here is another inking..this time I am being more
careful to press on the "dark" spots" with the heel of my palm..

Here is a shot from the first print after the final edit, and

you can see on right where the dark area isn't fully dark..

so that is a spot that I need to pay more attention to inking and

pressing firmly...

Here is a detail...

another detail...I am actually pretty happy with the graphic delivery of the

"buildings"...you never know while carving the linoleum...if

the strategy for where the darks and the whites should be

is going to make sense to the human eye later..and have

enough variation...

(here's a spot to press better on the backside of the paper)

hey ..there's a building that needs windows..
I just notice that while writing the blog..
So that means there will be an edition of 4

before I change the master...

A fully pressed print on the linocut, next to a new print...

Love this photo....

I am pretty happy that the shading differences

of the background came out in the final print...

This video demonstrates...the loading of the brayer with ink...at first the ink is too thin. I judge the ink thickness by the sound of the snapping of the ink as it separates from the brayer..and also by the ridges on the brayer and the inking surface. So then after trying to ink the linoleum. I realize that I need more ink...then you can see the ink snapping is louder and the ridges are taller.

This video shows the pressing the paper..and the final print. I like this print..it is slightly over inked, but I love the super dark places that show up in the background...

With the rest of the paper scraps I

update the "Heedless" master linoleum..

and printed Heedless again 6 times I think..

So I went to Ikea and got frames

so I'll put some photos in of the

finished framed prints.

Heedless Short Movie Premier

I'm an odd sort,

I suppose we all get that by now...

My 10 year old daughter is still

struggling with that my

eccentricities seem

to be

multiplying..

She was game enough to photograph

me in the front yard with my flippers

on..

For the garage sale fashion spread.

But anyway ...this short movie

took 5 takes (I wanted no visible

feet)...but

I realized that kids as unpaid extras are only

going to give you so many takes..

So grab your popcorn,

and

Come to the Heedless Movie Premier!

Its about abstractness, reflection, minimalism, shadows, ....

If I had a skateboard, and somehow didn't kill myself or anyone else trying to shoot the film above...I could get a smoother shot...

and it would make a good movie...of watching me try this...if I had a viking hat on and did this...someone could get a million youtube views....see your fame is waiting for you...

Someday there won't be any more powerlines....so we need to enjoy the art they create while they are here...

This is sort of an experiential still life...the object isn't moving...its still..the viewer is moving...

If your brain starts to feel weird after my movie premier...then ...its working...

This...to me is the most successful...smooth panning...perfect background sound... good graphic movement and composition...

of what I saw inside the restaurant but I restrained myself. It was a beautiful elderly lady's birthday (80ish) and she was wearing a fabulous shiny crown and had many helium balloon tied to her chair. Her guests were staring unabashedly out the window....at me....I waved)

Pictures of the Garden at Dusk

My husband is the big gardener

in our family.

When I moved away from my last

garden, I couldn't garden anymore...but
I moved

a few

trees and

vines to

my new

home with me.

The kiwis (one male and one female)...were mad at me for

digging them up and moving them after 2 years..

I apologized for years..and

thought they'd never

forgive me

but

guess

what...

kiwis are growing!!

.....and the vines are really going nuts in all directions.

there are tiny kiwis all over the place.

I also dug up and moved my fig tree with

me...

Last year we started 3 new fig trees..
This one is about 10 years old I guess...

I also moved an apple tree..which is now in my

front yard.

I left my handbuilt rock walls,

my crab apple tree, my almond tree,

my climbing roses,

a cherry tree...

and

many

memories from

when

my children

were small

and only care about

tricycles and sippy cups.

blueberries....

This is a rose that has been in this yard probably

since the 1940s..

very old...very simple
Roses are edible, and wild rose has

an essence that can restore joy...

So..
I love to smell and snack on these tiny

spray free roses..

A few garlics that my husband has allowed to bloom..for seeds..

This is the male kiwi...climbing up the fig tree....

I love artichokes...I used to have

them plants in raised rock beds

so that their purple blooms would

tower over me as I walked the path next to them.

I am glad to see some again...

Tomato blossoms....

Potato blossom...

My husband devised copper protection for the squash

seedlings that were getting mowed over by the slugs...

Punkin blossom....

raspberries...and a grape leaf.
It looks like the grapes are going to be very

plentiful this year!

and I did move some raspberries

from my other home...these are their

descendants...

This is a kind of a pea....

New Business Cards for Heedless

My daughter was busy designing business cards at the Kinko's Kiosk. One of her fiddling mentors and a fiddle teacher told her that he was accomplished enough to teach fiddle. So she started designing fiddle teacher business cards. (She's all excited)

I was making business cards, the lower tech way......using my "Heedless" Linocut, and a black and white copier. Her cards would cost $29.99 for 250...I made 160 for about $3.00 .

She was not impressed for most of the process, but at the end she had to

admit...it was a great deal..

Here is the original linocut..and the first copy after I'd

added hand made text.

It is weird for me to get used to that I could bring in

an USB drive and copy my image from that.
I could have used fonts from my Jasc...but

oh well..hand drawn fonts are homey..

This is the first copy with the

handwritten sections

added.

Business cards have changed alot also;

I don't really see a reason to put

an address or phone number on them...

I wish I could have remembered my

blog address while I was at Kinkos..

Reducing the size 64% and adjusting paper edge shadows

The cards on "natural cardstock" were the cards printed for $3.00
The other sets printed on regular paper were 1/3 as much.

I took a big step for me and brought some mugs

out to Last Thursday on Alberta Street..

and sat with them while my kids

played music to the passing crowd.

Here's part of the passing crowd..this little person

held this mesmerized position for a really long time,

(she's looking at my kids playing violin)

I could have gotten 200 pictures..

The event was so crowded that many people were stressed by the
crowdedness of the street, but still many people stopped and

I gave out many of my old even more informal "business cards"..
...so I thought I'd get some more

cards....

Soon I'll announce a summer giveaway of a Heedless Mug (maybe two)

not sure. Joining the FB page will be the way to enter for that drawing...
I am thinking that I hold the drawing when I have 100 "likes" on
Heedless Facebook.

I will announce the lucky mug soon...I think it is going to be

a Cityscape mug! I have the perfect one...

Photographic Still Lives

In college I loved to paint still lives, and draw still lives...and

now I love to gaze at still lives, and can become

transfixed by their beauty...so I photograph them

Still Lives and The Abstract Mundane

Sometimes I want to photos to be really clean graphically, lines and shadows, or uncluttered moods, lost moments, the chatter in another room. But the unglamorous clutter is also very still...and these photos can become beautifully abstract the closer you zoom in. I like to find an unlikely still life, something that is often not noticed as worthy of art. The cheap trophy, a stack of pens. I didn't try to make this collection perfect or glamorous.

I am hoping that you'll take some photos and collect them on Flickr or Photobucket...or anyplace that will let you grab the HTML of the slideshow...and then I can host a mini exhibition of your interpretation of Mundane Still Lives.

So this post...is scheduled...while I am away..
(Don't worry two neighbors are watching the house, and
one of them has a son who is a police officer.)

So I am hoping that you will collect some photos while I am gone and share your
work with me with credits and links to your website when I come back.
My only limitation is please all rated G photos my dears...

Trout Goes To Union Station

Someday when my children are grown and are parents, somewhere in their mind

they will remember the day that we went to Union Station to pick up their step-brother

and their mother..had a paper trout in her purse. Hopefully they will remember with

fondness how their mother looked with glee at the world and photographed Trout again and again.

Though small groups of business people smoking by the parking meter made an effort to

not be curious what the heck I was doing with a camera and Trout, my children

had no choice but to celebrate the world through Trout's eyes...

Well some of these photos...Trout helped me see them...like

look at the geometrical threes in this one...

Trout doesn't smoke, but he

also doesn't judge...

Portlanders can try and guess where this is!

The people getting off the bus stared at me

during this shot...
it was hard to get Trout in focus...

Trout and the big shiny Pink Building in Portland

The shadow is crumpled..

Right while I am lining up this important and critical shot,
people pour out of a meeting from this swanky building,

there were all modern retro yellow chairs in their

meeting room.
Trout and I could see the decor from outside.

Thank Goodness a Successful Kiln Firing!

This is a Hellebore drawing that I did that
included...come city buildings
based on a sketch that I did a while ago...

This is a snack bowl... :)

..and a close up...

CityScape Mug...and so far on this kiln..no seams have

popped on the Porcelain...which makes me love

Trillium Porcelain even more...

This is a very verry tall mug...you can drink latte's until

you are able to fly to the moon....

This was the new experimental glaze of the kiln...
Grass Green over Cinnamon red Clay..
...and I like it!

It was hard to take a photo in the approaching dusk that shows

the depth of the green and blue flecks..it is very pretty.

I also learned that this glaze shouldn't be antiqued...

Which is what I did here..
"before" pictures are on the FB Heedless Fan page...

So at first I was pretty dissappointed,

but then I looked at it with new eyes..

chocolate eyes...

dark chocolate eyes....

and now it looks yummy....

Every kiln has some surprises in it...and a chocolate surprise...

is not a bad surprise after all....

the potatoes for lunch are probably burning at this point...

This is a small person who lives in my house, and asks me loads of questions.
Most of these questions have no answers, and the ones that have answers

...seems like the answers contain no information that would be

valuable for decision making of any kind...

This small person makes colorful monsters...and
talks to me ....alot....

Small person likes these mugs that I had hanging around from 2005...

I forgot how to make the red stain on the left..but it is

pretty huh.. the glaze on the right is grass green..on porcelain..

Planting Succulents in Spiral Mugs

The great thing about succulents...is that they only need mist.

So I am excited about making more

homes for succulents, and for now

they are enjoying living in Mugs that didn't quite make the

cut for saleable drinking mugs...

These are going to make great gifts..and
I love to look at them..

I just love how freshly misted succulents look...

These planted pieces are available for sale through

my blog or Facebook page or if you see me at a Street Fair. I don't think that I

am going to try to ship them.

Putting Some Nature Back~Trout Adventures

The Trout Project is too find a spot that

needs more Nature and to stick the Trout there.
Thanks to Jessica Gowling for including me in the project...

This project is inspired by Rhya Tamasavskas and allows me the
opportunity to inject nature back into a place where you think it
belongs...

Here are some of my photos : (I'm just getting started)

I got attached to my Trout

(even though I thought he was a Salmon for a while)

So I have taken a few pictures of

Yep and some of these pictures are hot off the presses...Trout in Action

on the "new to us" solar panel that we found at a Garage Sale...

this morning!!

...and it works!! We already have 2 solar panels..now we have 3.

Oh...and on the subject of clean energy..We bought 20$ worth of super

bright low watt bulbs at Grocery Outlet...and saved

$91 on our electricity bill last month (almost half!)

Some of those saved watts are going to help me fire the kiln

this month. We also buy "clean watts" through our power company..

So we pay a little extra for wind "watts".

Sitting in the Sun, Drawing Cityscapes...

As an artistic mother, you may be able to relate to the struggle

to get out of the house by yourself for a few hours.
So I had been thinking...draw on bowls...on Alberta Street...
.....draw on bowls ...on Alberta Street.....

and it was rainy or cold...

But this morning it was perfect!

So I know that this isn't the hugest view..but it is the view

from Townsend's Tea Hut on Alberta...
one of my favorite spots for a
Roasted Coconut Mate...

and so...I looked at the view with new artistic eyes..and

saw that the ugly banal-ness of the
cheap buildings and the wobbly fence

was perfect.

Painting and Staining..and loading the Kiln

I made this short short movie...hoping to turn it into a grabbable button. Well so far it doesn't work for that...but its still a cute tiny video.

These are going to be refrigerator magnets...I am almost through staining

all of them...these ones I did some in bluish and some in yellowish peach.
I can't find the finished pictures, probably on a mystery SD card around here somewhere.

I can't drink coffee anymore, but I do love tea..and I just

discovered Tecchino herbal coffee which is super yummy.
This a button dedicated to the comfort of a warm mug of hot beverage...

This is all stained and painted and now it is sitting in

a little bit of water on a crystal plate..this

makes the glaze easier to wipe off of the bottom..
This is about to be dipped in clear glaze.

...and the flower mug...on the launch pad...

Here is something new...
I have been excited about cityscapes and buildings lately,

and I was thinking that it would be fun to make buildings

that are recognizable as Portland buildings.
But first I just tried to make a mold for a building...
Not as easy as it looks when carving each side..

So I actually forgot that I had these in the kiln..and

it was fun to try them out...I used a clay that is a little

rougher and I am going to do it again with porcelain...

But I like it...I am still a kid, and I like little things...

I think it would be cool to have a little collection of buildings...

Imagine these in white porcelain with black stains or colored stain...
and I think they could easy make beads for an urban style choker necklace...

An Animation HTML button...everyone needs one of these!

I used to make alot of animations when the kids were younger,

and I'd show them how to make animations...using paper.
I would have them draw a back ground and some paper characters

and make a story with the characters and I would shoot about 25 photos

and cheerfully edit them all (while my 30's were slipping away)

and put them into an animation wizard...and presto...an animation.

They were enthralled and amazed.

(it was pretty fun)

So I thought about an HTML button and how fun it would be to

have an animated HTML button..and so my "Love" button was born.

(on the right column)

Then when Saylor made sent me some of her prints that I love..
I wondered how easy it would be to make a thumbnail animation for her

and make it a grabbable button so that she could share it.
You can have it on your blog..and when people click on it.

They will visit SaylorMade.

So this is story of how it went.

So I use Paint Shop Pro...and it is an ancient version...ancient I tell you!

But it works so first I took a photo of the print that I wanted to use...

and shrunk it to thumbnail size. Then I made a copy of that (so now I have two).

One copy has a memory of the original size..and one doesn't.

So I used the one that had a memory...go undo the shrink..and redo the shrink..which

a little less shrink each time..then copied and pasted as

as new selection on the second copy with no memory, but the correct thumbnail size.

In this way saving and numbering the saves as I went I was able to make

a series of photos that looked like I was zooming in on the print.

Then I wanted to make the animation loop...so I needed to order the

images to look as though I am zooming out.

But I also want to put the name of her blog..

So I put the "SaylorMade" on there...

Taking care to line the wording up as perfectly

as I could with the image before it...so that the text wouldn't

jump around (people hate jumping text)...

Then I thought..

Eureka!

What if I make the "SaylorMade" text bigger on each image...so that

while the background is zooming out ,the text is zooming in.

(either its going to be great or the view is going to feel sea sick~

we won't know until the end...but what the hell right?)

So I made the text bigger as the images zoomed out,

then to stabilize the motion...I put
"printmaking and illustration" stationary...(thank goodness right?)

THEN! I saved all these images with the number in the order that I wanted to

line them up in the animation software.

So far so good.

(while I was doing this I was also taking these "PrtSC"
so that you could see a still shot of the software)

I was also planting succulents, picking up my daughter from class,

doing yoga, and I swept the floor and told the kids to brush their teeth,

and luckily my husband made dinner or we might have starved.

But I did make the salad dressing...

so anyhoooooo

Here is everything saved in its tidy little order...you don't want to get confused on the

order...because it is like brainpuzzles cubed to try and go back and fix that

stuff.

So with Paint Shop Pro...came Animation 3..and it was free

at the time..so it probably still is. It is so ancient that when it asks

you about saving the animation...it shows modem speeds...slow ones...so that you can estimate

how long it is going to take for your web page to load the animation...

So this wasn't completely smooth...I used the animation wizard...

and I forgot to grab a few of my images and then wondered where they were for a while.

I tried each frame at 20/100ths of a second and it was too frantic..

so I went to 48/100 ths of a second...and added several repeating frames at the end

so that the viewer can rest inbetween loops...

and this is what we ended up with:

In retrospect there is a little too much motion which could be cured by having a stationary

frame...but oh well its pretty good.

The object of these buttons is to get the viewer to

see it

click it

and visit your blog

and maybe grab your button for themselves...

So for them to grab a button you need to have

button sharing code loaded into a gadget on the

side of your blog...

I can't type that code here because blogger will

turn it into the gadget and not show the text...

Oh please let it work...oh please...oh please

Ooooh it works!!

Now I had to look all over good to find a box to share the code, because the copy to clipboard button that I mentioned before didn't work for me. I think that this box only works in firefox...so hopefully that is what you have.

So...if you want the html button sharing gadget with SaylorMade's button...that is the code to copy. Pop it into the "html gadget" in Blogger...and it should work.

Alright...well thats enough time on the computer....

So here I am waiting for the rapture to happen and thinking of as many rapture jokes as I can while I am cleaning the basement, and the mailman brings me super fun mail!
My mailman is a dear...and I think he would like to be in our Spazz club..because

some days he will hand me mail...in which every piece should go to another house, and

I look through it and have to chase him down to give it back...

We do this mail ritual often...like mailman ground hog day.
So when the mail comes I don't even think of it as being my

mail...but this really stood out

So fun!! so fun to open...

she included sticker of horses, because

my sketchbook is mostly inspired by horses, and she is also a

sketchbook artist!

I had to gasp when I lift the wax paper to protect some original

prints that she made. I love her sense of graphic design...and

I love the wheat images...they look like they are flying to me!

Love this..I don't get a lot of mail art and I treasure

them I am going to put these on the bulletin board by my

studio..like a warm fuzzy...

She also sent me an illustration from a book that

she rescued from the garbage pile of a book sale...
It shows a spazzy chick tripping over a stick while looking

at her friend the spazzy pig..!! Haha this is perfect!

I think of all the animals in the back ground as the less spazzy twitter friends

who can appreciate good humor, but don't lock their keys in the car as

often as the chick and the pig do...
I love children's book illustrations too...

and then I saw the embossed leaf on the foil paper...
I love this idea..and I hadn't seen this done before...

The image is so delicate, it was a challenge to catch it on a photo..

so pretty...

Making Your Own HTML button and Sharing Gadget

So here is where we start...with the image...

Find a nice catchy image...I am not an expert, but I think that simple attractive images with good contrast are catchier. I am also thinking that humorous or fun looking images are going to stand out in a button collection. I am going to work on an animated button..and will share that process as well..

So..for my first button I chose and item that I was hoping would be a good visual, and I used a graphics program (paint shop pro 7) to put text on it..Then I saved it at 1/2 size and uploaded it to photobucket. I think that Flickr is another good place to upload.

Then...I found this code on the internet and played around with it until I got it right...

So I think if you press the above button..you will have copied the code to your clipboard. Then you can put into a word program to alter it...or you can put it right into Blogger. 1) your blog 2) design 3) add gadget 4) HTML/Java Script ....opens a box where you can paste your code and work with it right on top of these instructions.

Then...in the above HTML...you want to replace what is inside the first set of "" marks (on line 1 and 2), with the URL of your image or GIF (animation) . The next code is "alt" and inside the next quotations is the name of your image, mine is the file name. The next alt is what I thought was going to be text on the image, it didn't work but I put the text in this alt quotation set anyway.

Then on the third line after href= is a set of quotations where you want your button to lead to ...when it is pressed. Probably your blog URL. On the 4th line is src= in this quotations you want to again put in your image URL. The following "alt" is the same as in the 2nd line. Your height and width may vary...you may have to play around with that a little ....in the final line.

THEN if you haven't already...copy your finished HTML..and in Blogger go into "design" then "add gadget"...find the "HTML/Java Script" and past it in there with a title inviting people to grab your button... save and look at the blog to see if it is how you like it...I had to adjust my button quite a bit before I got it right..

Let me know how it works! I will write an animated button post...with a step by step...as I create one...perhaps next blog post.

I am drawing with a chalky pencil that is color safe to cone 10 (2,284 degrees F)...

Don't forget to grab my brand new button on the right, paste the HTML into

going to post a little workshop on how to make a button...

and THEN....I am going to animate a button...

Staining and Getting Motivated!

Well first of all I decided to glue this back together..only the patch on the right ...
the moth's left wing was damaged...so we'll see how it works as a mold..

I have hundreds of these...I am hoping to make

business cards and gifts from these...I want to give them

away to frequent commentors on my blog or on the

Facebook Heedless page.
I love your comments, and I love to build a community.
I used to work in a wonderful academic studio and I miss
all of the people...so Bert and I love to hear what you
are working on, your questions, songs that you like, what
color socks you are wearing, stuff like that...

I am hoping to pop many of these refrigerator magnet/business cards
in the mail..when they are out of the kiln...hopefully I'll send one to you!
(I'm not going to tell you home many tries it took me to spell
refrigerator)

Bert was singing along to the music while I stained and

wiped these...each time is artistic...I actually love

watching how the stain behaves and watching the

images pop to life..

I hope this survives the high fire without popping..its

Trillium Porcelain...Bert has his fingers crossed...

I love how gentle and dreamy the color ends up on these.....

This is a new design..not carved..I just drew a picture of

Heedless into a slab..so its a little different to stain..

but I really like the handle

This is a video I made using audio that I captured at a singing class in Big Sur...with Laurie Lewis, leading about 20 kids in 3 part harmony..(my kids are singing too)...and photos that I took of the ocean, the flowers, the paintings and the people at Leja's home in Big Sur.

Sunstone From a Sister

Believed to be a piece of the sun, sunstone was prized by ancient magicians, who used it to attract the strength of the sun and it's associated power and wealth. It is commonly associated with the Phoenix that appeared at the first sunrise.

Sunstone is an Oligoclase, which is a species of plagioclase feldspar. Specifically it is one of the six species used in gemstone jewelry. Labradorite is also one of the other more common plagioclase feldspar, as well as Albite.
